Angela from Oh She Glows posted a Spelt Burger recipe this morning, and after review I noticed that I had ALL of the ingredients! Well, minus the chia seeds… but still, I was excited! I love veggie patties and I am always on the hunt to find a recipe but it seems like I am always missing an ingredient.
I used her base recipe and tweaked it just a small amount. Thanks again Angela for the awesome recipe!
Spelt Veggie Patties
- 1 cup or one can cooked beans of your choice
- 1 carrot, chopped in large pieces
- 1 cup chopped onion in large pieces
- 1/2 bell pepper, chopped in in large pieces
- 1/4 cup raw spinach
- 1/2 teaspoon dill
- 2-3 fresh basil leaves or 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 2-3 sprigs of fresh cilantro (optional)
- tablespoon red pepper flakes
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder, or 1 clove fresh garlic
- 1/4 cup sunflower seeds
- 1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds
- 1 cup of spelt flour
- salt and pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 375F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper or spray with cooking oil.
Place all of the ingredients in a food processor, MINUS the seeds and flour. Blend until mixture is creamy and dense, scraping the sides when needed. Remove the mixture and place in a large mixing bowl. Add seeds and stir until incorporated. Add flour a little at a time, stirring after each time. Salt and pepper the mixture to your liking.
Shape patties and bake for 15 minutes, flip and bake for another 10 minutes. Allow to cool 5-10 minutes before serving.
Serve them on your favorite bun, flat bread or wrap them in lettuce.
Makes 10 patties
NOTES
I used a can of tri-mix beans.
I also could have used more HEAT – next time I will add some jalapeño or more red pepper flakes. Also, be sure to taste the raw mixture before baking; I guess I love salt and pepper because I had to add more. The mixture will be gummy – make a ball, put it on the cooking sheet and press. It’s a lot easier this way.

Cannot wait to try these! I love veggie burgers and am slowly converting the kids into loving them as well.
So what is spelt flour? I make bean burgers or cakes all the time and LOVE them. I love the idea of adding the sunflower and pumpkin seeds to these! Thanks!
I froze all of mine and I am hoping that they will be ok. =)
