A few weeks ago, Bub’s (Jordan) and I went to visit my mom for a lunch date. She lives in the northern part of Washington near the town of Mount Vernon. It’s about an hour drive from my condo. I adore downtown Mount Vernon because it has a comforting, rustic feel to it. Brick buildings, quaint shops, a large Co-Op and coffee shops where elderly folk sit and chat. Mount Vernon, and the surrounding area, is known for its rich soil and large farms. Most of the local restaurants serve local food and support the local farmers. A cool fact: Cascadian Farm, which I am sure a lot of you are familiar with, is located near Mount Vernon!
Here are some statistics on the Skagit Valley farming – it’s quite impressive!
So when my mom and I decided to make a lunch date, I wanted to pick somewhere we have never eaten at. I did a quick google search and found The Calico Cupboard Cafe.
Located in a large brick building, the Calico Cupboard offers homemade sweets and breads and a fantastic menu focusing on local and seasonal produce. The inside is open with tall ceilings, worn hardwood flooring and ample seating. It was a very mild and sunny afternoon so we decided to sit in the outdoor patio space.
The out door space had relaxing water fountains and an array of potted plants and flowers. Very relaxing!
While we were eating, a train passed through. Jordan thought it was so cool!
I ordered a grilled vegetable salad, minus the cheese. It was a huge salad with perfectly seasoned grilled vegetables (eggplant, peppers, squash, onions, garlic) with a side of fresh, homemade wheat bread.
The cafe is very popular with the locals and they have an entire wall dedicated to all of the awards they have received.
Even the restrooms were restored with a rustic feel – I love the door handles!
If you ever get the chance to visit Mount Vernon WA, or just passing through Skagit County on I-5, the Calico Cupboard is conveniently located right off the interstate. I highly suggest stopping and relaxing for a bit. Even if you are not in the mood for a meal, buy a sweet treat for the road. You will not be disappointed.
