Grocery Haul – 4.14.15

It’s time for another grocery haul post! Trader Joe style, of course! 😉

After I dropped Jordan off at school I wanted to pick a few things up at the store so off I went! Note to self: shop early in the morning more often because there was no one at the store – score for aisle space!

I just took everything out of each bag and plopped it on the counter. I usually try to organize but not this morning – lol

grocery 1

:Bag one:

Fresh flowers for the house, green bananas (my son LOVES green bananas – he refuses to eat them yellow) organic firm tofu, frozen pineapple, apple sauce squeeze packs, sweet potato fries, assortment of bars, Ezekiel bread, a can of corn and pears

grocery 2

:Bag two:

Half dozen organic eggs, cheese tortellini, yogurt, lemons/limes, more bars, cilantro hummus, frozen blueberries, apple juice boxes, parsley, green grapes, zucchini, heirloom tomatoes, fresh mint and strawberries

grocery 3

:Bag three:

Heritage Flake cereal, cheddar cheese, sweet potatoes, yellow bell pepper, avocado, black forest ham, apples, green onions, broccoli, romaine lettuce, fresh basil, carrots and chicken breast

So there you have it! I needed to stock up on some fresh produce and I bought extra for recipe testing this week, too!

What is one thing you always pick up at the grocery store? For me it’s apples and Larabars. My go to snack!

Grocery Haul – 1.10.15

Hey guys! It’s time for me to post another grocery haul post! I shopped exclusively at Trader Joes – this was a pretty big one! I have a lot of recipes to try out this week!

( Please keep in mind that my family does not follow a 100% CLEAN lifestyle. We have snacks, chocolate and I do not restrict. While I follow a heavy plant based diet, not everyone in my family does. We have a well balanced and HAPPY household! )

GH 1.11.15 (2)

When I do these I try to sort food by the type… but this time I just pulled everything out of a bag and snapped a picture!  Sorry if it is a little jumbled – I will post everything together below.

Bag 1: Kashi cereal, bananas, Peanut Butter Dog Treats, dried cranberries, onions and garlic, avocado, butternut squash and veggie chips.

GH 1.11.15 (3)

Bag 2: Cilantro, spring mix, black bean crisps, beets, organic tofu, Smart Dogs (vegan hot dogs), herbs (basil and oregano), chicken tenders, yogurt, peanut butter and coconut sugar.

  GH 1.11.15 (4)

Bag 3: Strawberry Apple Sauce, miso, chicken noodle soup, cilantro hummus, mac n’ cheese, pasta sauce, maple syrup, shredded parm, whole wheat tortillas, brussel sprouts, Joe-Joes, apple cider vinegar, crackers

GH 1.11.15

Bag 4: zucchini, baby spinach, eggplant, blueberries, peppers, red onion, cucumber, sweet potatoes

GH 1.11.15 (5)

Bag 5: unsalted plum tomatoes, goat cheese, string cheese, coconut yogurt, whole wheat waffles, frozen blueberries and strawberries, coconut oil, falafel, baby carrots, cheddar cheese, apple juice boxes

GH 1.11.15 (6)

Bars – We love bars in our family! Organic fruit leather, Z-Bars, Larabars and a new (to me) Luna bar flavor!

GH 1.11.15 (7)

I also picked up a bouquet of flowers – beautiful! I buy myself flowers quite a bit! No shame!

  GH 1.11.15 (8)

After all of the groceries were put away, I treated myself to a small glass of Cab. Flowers and wine… I treat myself well! 😉

Healthy Eating at Target!

Hi friends!

I wanted to create a healthy eating project showcasing average stores that have started carrying clean, organic foods! Often times people think that it’s more difficult to eat healthy without a Whole Foods or health food store in their area. I am here to prove that WRONG! ANYONE can eat healthy while shopping at most local stores!

Jordan and I were at Target the other day picking up a few items and I thought it would be fun and educational to cruise down the food aisles to see the selection of food they offer. I was really surprised to see so many healthy and organic options! You still have to read those labels, though – remember that not all Organic or seemingly healthy options are that healthy for you!

I was not necessarily looking for all non-GMO or organic food. I was looking for healthy options that were as wholesome, and as clean as possible! I was also looking for vegetarian and vegan options. Again, please read labels! Even organic foods contain excessive sugars and often times hidden MSG!

Here is what I was able to find:

Healthy Eating at Target!

Hi friends!

I wanted to create a healthy eating project showcasing average stores that have started carrying clean, organic foods! Often times people think that it’s more difficult to eat healthy without a Whole Foods or health food store in their area. I am here to prove that WRONG! ANYONE can eat healthy while shopping at most local stores!

Jordan and I were at Target the other day picking up a few items and I thought it would be fun and educational to cruise down the food aisles to see the selection of food they offer.

There was a pretty basic yet plentiful selection of fresh produce – bananas, avocados, apples, oranges, potatoes, onion, tomatoes, berries, grapes, pineapples, and greens!

IMG_4536

IMG_4538

I was able to find organic baby spinach and baby spring mix!

IMG_4537

Dairy and non-dairy:

They do carry non-dairy milk such as Almond Milk and Soy Milk. I didn’t see if they had Organic Cows Milk. And they also carry a nice selection of plain yogurt and Greek yogurt. I always suggest buying plain Greek yogurt and adding maple syrup, raw honey or stevia to sweeten it to your taste. Add raw fruit, too!

IMG_4539

I also found organic eggs! I was really surprised by this find!

IMG_4534

Meats/Proteins:

They do sell raw meat but since I do not purchase meat on a regular basis I looked right over this area! I would look to see if they carry organic meat.

I was able to find organic and nitrate free sausage and bacon. These are usually not clean due to the preservatives but I do know Applegate is one of the cleaner brands.

IMG_4532

Hummus!!!!

IMG_4535

They have a huge selection of Amy’s frozen dinners – these are normally all vegan and pretty clean! I usually never purchase frozen meals but these would be a great option for those that are looking for a healthy frozen food option. Again, read the ingredients!

IMG_4531

IMG_4525

And they also had a huge selection of vegan and vegetarian meat options for those that do not eat meat. My son loves the vegan chikn nuggets!

IMG_4529

I love frozen veggies for soups, salads and roasting! I always check the ingredients to see if there is anything added – if there are more ingredients than the vegetable, put it back!

IMG_4526

Frozen Breakfast:

Van’s waffles are really quite good! I briefly looked at the breakfast bowls and I am planning on doing some more research on these items. Marketing can be very appealing until you start to look at the actual ingredients!

IMG_4528

Gluten Free Breads:

I was happy to see gluten free options, too! They sell Udi’s products along with other gluten free options in the bread aisle.

IMG_4527

IMG_4522

Snacks/Nut Butters/Kitchen Staples:

I was pleased to see almond butter, organic peanut butter and raw honey in the aisle!

IMG_4521

IMG_4520

IMG_4523

Grains and seeds:

I was so happy to see quinoa, lentils, chia seeds and brown / wild rice!

IMG_4515

IMG_4516

Snacks:

They did have healthier snack options for kids and adults alike. Do you keep seeing the GREEN Choose Well labels? Target has sections that are marked in these green labels. Not all are healthy, but most are a BETTER option.

Unsalted Nuts

IMG_4504

Annie’s Organic Snacks

Snacks:

  Pantry Staples:

Plain Oats

IMG_4514

Unsweetened Applesauce

IMG_4517

Organic Chili and Soups

   Organic Ketchup

IMG_4524

So what do you think?! Still think it’s hard to eat healthy without a Whole Foods or a health food store? Times are changing and the demand for organic and healthier options are in full force! You can expect to see many more options at your local market or grocery store! And remember: if you don’t see something, ask for it!

Food Journal – Weekend Eats!

Hi friends!

How was your weekend? Ours was relaxing and productive! I was able to finish some projects around the house, clean, grocery shop and snuggle by the tree… I do love the sight of Christmas tree lights! The soft glow is so cozy!

groceries8

Here are some of my eats that I had this weekend!

groceries9

MMmmm I love veggie plates for lunch and dinner! I was looking through some of my old posts and I kept seeing these veggie plates pop up! I remember LOVING these so re-created one for my lunch on Saturday! I had peanut butter and white bean hummus for dip – I love dipping celery and carrots in peanut butter!

groceries6

We also went out to Taco Del Mar and I ordered a bowl – I forget the actual name. I skipped the tortilla and rice and instead I had black beans, chicken, guac, lettuce, tomato, salsa, jalapenos and cilantro. I was really good and the perfect size!

I also went to Trader Joes for my weekly stock up!

groceries1

groceries2

Produce – organic apples, avocado, red bell pepper, bananas, red potatoes, sugar peas, green beans, brussel sprouts, lemon, onion, frozen edamame and organic kale.

Grocery Haul

I love showing you what I buy at the grocery store. It is one of my most requested blog post topics! I tend to buy the same food over and over {I love my staples!} but this is a great learning tool for every one that needs clean eating inspiration and to really see what you should be buying.

Most people want to eat healthier but they simply do not know where to start. Learning how to shop again is like learning how to walk again. There will be temptation to reach for a bag of chips, a box of cookies or that tempting dessert from the bakery. With time and dedication, these temptations will no longer be an issue. It will become instinctive to buy healthy items so your kitchen is fully stocked with healthy food for you and your family to enjoy.

I buy a lot of fresh produce, especially in the summer. I eat a very high raw diet {which is the cleanest and healthiest for you!} and my son LOVES all kinds of fresh fruit. He eats a very high raw diet as well.

grocery (2)

As you can see there is a ton of variety here. I was out of most of my produce so I had to stock up again. I do try to buy all organic if it is available. And remember to carry a list of the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen around with you – this helps you prioritize between organic and non-organic.

Produce – cauliflower, organic apples, grapefruit, red bell pepper, red onion, bananas, kale, celery, cucumber, strawberries, figs, apricots, nectarines, spinach and a huge watermelon.

grocery

Frozen fruit for smoothies, natural peanut butter, maple syrup, ground turkey, canned beans, rice crackers, semi sweet chocolate chips, salsa, kalamata olives and dark chocolate.

grocery (4)

I do buy Jordan some fun stuff. Trader Joes has a great selection of healthy food for kids. Keep in mind that he eats a diet very high in raw foods and low processed foods. Fun foods will last him quite a while as I make sure to balance everything. Macaroni and Cheese, Joe’s O’s {like spaghetti O’s but MUCH better}, toaster waffles, applesauce packets, yogurt, corn dogs {he loves corn dogs!}

grocery (3)

I also stopped at Whole Foods for a few items: gluten free bread, bulk beans and grains {in the paper bags}, almonds, tamari {gluten free soy sauce}, bars for me and Jordan and natural graham cereal for Jordan.

grocery (5)
This was the first time I picked up this gluten free bread and it’s very good! I don’t eat a lot of bread so this loaf will last me 3 weeks or so in the fridge. Gluten free bread can be pricey {this loaf was over 5$} but since it lasts me so long I think it’s very reasonable.

So there you go! This shopping trip was last weekend and I am needing to head to the market again this week. I will be sure to keep posting my grocery hauls for you to see!

Trader Joes Grocery Haul

I really REALLY love shopping at Trader Joes. I shop at Fred Meyer because they have a huge Organic selection and at Trader Joes. Fred Meyer has a rewards card and at 4 months you get a rebate along with great coupons. This time I got over $13 back and a TON of coupons for fresh produce!

This time I did my shopping all at Trader Joes.

IMG_0482

I hadn’t done a large grocery haul in a few weeks and I was out of a lot of things. It was time to stock up!

IMG_0484

Bag 1: Frozen fruit for munching and smoothies, frozen green beans and peas, fresh broccoli, turkey corn dogs, guac, hummus, pot stickers, yogurt, waffles and ground turkey.

IMG_0485

Bag 2 & 3: White wine, beans, tomato sauce, bananas, lemons, limes, cucumbers, sea salt, salsa, sparkling water, honey dew melon, red potatoes, coffee.

IMG_0486

Bag 4: cilantro, plain Greek yogurt, dark chocolate, carrots, celery, apples, romaine, kale, avocados.

IMG_0488

Bag 5: organic beef jerky, 100% apple juice boxes, applesauce, almond chocolate milk, buttermilk pancake mix, red thai curry sauce, sri racha, organic peanut butter, pistachios, taco seasoning, assortment of natural nut bars and fruit leather, almond chocolate granola, gummy vitamins.

I also picked up a bag of these tortilla chips and had a light snack with some guacamole.

IMG_0487

IMG_0489

I love posting my grocery haul for you! I remember when I first starting reading blogs and transitioning into a cleaner life style, I searched high and low for grocery ideas and tips for shopping.

I must admit this trip was a little out of the ordinary and I purchased a few things that I normally do not. I am feeding two others besides me and I do like to keep some faster food options for nights that we are running errands or need a quick dinner.

And I didn’t pick up a lot of my fresh veggies because I am trying to by them as I need to limit waste. I tend to buy so much fresh produce that I wont use it all before it turns. Since I am now working from home I have time to plan and prep my meals and have the time and option to buy fresh produce as I need to.

Question: Did you grocery shop this weekend? How was your grocery haul?

Over Hauling Trader Joes!

Hey hey! Happy Saturday!

I like to start my posts with a Happy note because I hope your day is bright, positive and HAPPY! =) And if it’s not then I hope I can help your day start to feel better!

This morning started off on the right foot, for sure! Coffee and a request for chocolate chip pancakes from my little Bubbah!

IMG_0066

IMG_0067

I always add cinnamon and flax to the pancake mix for added nutrients and flavor. And of course some chocolate chips. This doesn’t happen very often but once in a while I like to make my son’s breakfast special!

IMG_0068

IMG_0070

He also requested a side of frozen fruit. Jordan LOVES to eat his fruit frozen, especially grapes!

IMG_0069

After breakfast I took some time to myself and headed to Trader Joes. Apparently we were out of groceries because I bought the entire store!

IMG_0073

I really like showing you all my grocery hauls! When I first started eating clean I depended on reading other blogs and getting some great food ideas. And I still continue to find inspiration from reading other health and fitness blogs!

So I hope these posts help you see what I buy and what a clean kitchen should look like!

IMG_0074

Basil, bell peppers, asparagus, sugar snap peas, lemon, bananas, cucumber, brussel sprouts, strawberries, heirloom tomatoes.

IMG_0075

Romaine hearts, yellow and red onion, apples, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, avocados, spinach and kale

IMG_0076

Melons!

IMG_0079

Laughing Cow swiss, hummus, chicken lime burgers (for when I need a quick meal!) string cheese, frozen fruit for smoothies, waffles, yogurt and ground turkey.

IMG_0077

Dried cranberries, taco shells, goat cheese, baked tofu, rice tortillas, almonds, potatoes, black beans, maple sryup, red pepper soup, 12 grain crackers and strawberry apple sauce.

IMG_0078

Herbs, Yerbba Mate tea, Lara Bars, chia seeds, taco seasoning, beans, coconut milk, pasta sauce, almond milk, kalamata olives, cereal and baking soda/powder.

So I wanted to add a few notes about my grocery shopping: I am buying for 3 – Marc, Jordan and myself. I have meat eaters and veggie eaters to please. I have food for prepping meals and for the times when I am rushing to put something on the table. I buy special snack type food for Jordan because I think it’s important for him to have his own special snacks. However, these snacks are wholesome foods with no added sugars or unnecessary ingredients.

I always make sure to have a lot of fresh produce on hand for smoothies, salads and meals. Tomorrow I will probably cook and prep a lot of my food for the week so it’s ready and prepared to grab and eat!

Please let me know if you have any questions about my shopping or meal planning! I don’t do the whole weekly meal planning but I make sure I have cut up veggies to grab and proteins already prepared.

After I got done organizing and putting my groceries away I sat down with a lovely bowl of fruit, yogurt and tea. I added a spoonful of peanut butter and some pieces of a Larabar. I love these messy bowls of goodness!

Grocery Time

Hi friends! I’m not sure what the weather was like today in your neck of the world but Seattle was breathtakingly BEAUTIFUL! Still a little chilly but so sunny!

DSC07576

The view from my apartment is amazing! Plus, I have a thing for sailboats – call it a crush, if you will. They look so graceful out on the water. Every weekend hundreds of sailboats float by my apartment. I just sit and watch with amazement… and a little jealousy. 😉

DSC07580

I went to the store early today for a few items and I thought I would share my loot with you. I swear, when I am in a funk or a not so good mood, I drive to the nearest WholeFoods and just walk up and down each isle. Something about being surrounded by food makes me feel so much better.

I did a pretty large shopping spree last weekend but I was running out of a few things.

Veggies: I still have a few items from last week. Plus, I have learned that less is more when it comes to fresh produce. I buy a handful of items and center my meals around them… this really helps cut down on waste.

DSC07582

  • collard greens
  • avocado
  • red bell pepper
  • apples
  • yellow onion

Frozen goods:

DSC07583

  • Peas
  • Peaches
  • Mixed Berries
  • Edamame

Rest of the goods:

DSC07584

  • bulk Azuki beans
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Smart Dogs
  • Cereal for Jordan
  • Tomato Soup
  • Beechers Cheese
  • mini Baguette
  • Chobani
  • String Cheese for Jordan
  • Unbleached flour
  • Organic Cane Sugar

That’s it! Not too many items this time but enough to get me through the week.
And I know that Whole Foods has a bad rap for being expensive. And yes, on some items they are. But I always try to by their house brand, 365, when ever possible. It cuts down on the price significantly. I do most of my shopping at Fred Meyer (they have a great organic/health food section) and Trader Joes. But I do like to treat myself to some shopping at Whole Foods. =)

Hope everyone had a great weekend!
