clean eating, groceries

What’s on your list?

A while back I used to do posts on what I bought at the grocery store. It seemed to help individuals see what type of clean, nutritious items to buy when they started to transition to clean eating.

I did a quick shopping trip for some basic, yet essential, items and thought I would snap a picture for you all to see.

Produce included:

  • Organic Gala Apples
  • Organic Bananas
  • Red Bell Pepper
  • Red Seedless Grapes
  • 2 Yellow Onions
  • Head of Romaine

Dry goods included:

  • Almond Breeze
  • Annie’s Organic Cheddar Bunnies, for Jordan
  • Prego Heartsmart Pasta Sauce
  • Organic Z Bars, for Jordan
  • Loaf of French Bread, not the cleanest but I am a carb-o-natic
  • 2 bars of Dark Chocolate, on sale!
  • Bulk Pumpkin Seeds
  • Bulk Granola
  • Canned goods: Great Northern Beans, Carrots, Green Beans, Garbonzo Beans

This was a light grocery shopping list as I only needed a few items. But for the most part I have been trying to be frugal and only buy what is needed. It really is amazing how many dishes you can create from only using a few key ingredients.

Veggie Tales

Happy Wednesday! The week half over, folks!

Ok, so some fun things to tell you all about: I have decided to run a half marathon in 5 WEEKS!

My hometown, Wenatchee WA, is having their annual full, half, 10K and 5K on April 17th and I bit the bullet and signed up for it! I am currently training for a half marathon in June, but as soon as I saw this one I knew I had to do it. It’s my hometown, you know?!

I’m not looking to set a record or to finish first, but just to have fun! I haven’t been home in a while and I have been feeling a bit homesick; I thought this would help my blues go away. =)

AND this morning I bought a Garmin – man, who knew that simple running could have so many gadgets!

I have never been a runner until this past year. My first step was fitted shoes and I was hooked. I love to run now and I hope to continue for many years to come!

I recently had a question concerning my dinner a few nights back. I thought it was a great question and wanted to share with all of you.

Kim asked if I thought Morningstar Veggie Burgers were really “clean”.

I do have a small correction on that post – that veggie burger was Gardenburger brand. Never the less, I still feel it’s an important topic to write about.

It is so simple for anyone to look in the freezer section and start buying non-meat products thinking they are a “healthy” alternative. But when you start looking at the actual ingredients in these products, they are filled with preservatives and ingredients the average person still cannot pronounce.

Here is an example from  Morningstar Farms® Grillers Prime® Veggie Burgers:

There are plenty of ingredients that are not “clean” nor are they natural.

Please do not think I am bashing Morningstar, or any other company that makes frozen, meatless food. In a pinch, I buy them. Jordan LOVES meatless chicken nuggets, too. And if I am at a restaurant that has veggie burgers, I order it with a smile.

The actual product that I was eating was Gardenburger GardenVegan.

Not horrible, in my opinion, and a lot “cleaner” than some.

Although this is one of my favorite pre-mad veggie burgers that I have eaten: Chez Gourmet.

You can read my review here – I love them!

However, 99% of the time I make my own veggie burgers. This is the simplest and most effective way to eat wholesome food – make it yourself! You know exactly what goes into your food and it ALWAYS tastes fresher and better than store bought!

Here is my go-to veggie burger recipe:

Spelt Veggie Patties

  • 1 cup or one can cooked beans of your choice
  • 1 carrot, chopped in large pieces
  • 1 cup chopped onion in large pieces
  • 1/2 bell pepper, chopped in in large pieces
  • 1/4 cup raw spinach
  • 1/2 teaspoon dill
  • 2-3 fresh basil leaves or 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 2-3 sprigs of fresh cilantro (optional)
  • tablespoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder, or 1 clove fresh garlic
  • 1/4 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds
  • 1 cup of spelt flour
  • salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 375F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper or spray with cooking oil.

Place all of the ingredients in a food processor, MINUS the seeds and flour. Blend until mixture is creamy and dense, scraping the sides when needed. Remove the mixture and place in a large mixing bowl. Add seeds and stir until incorporated. Add flour a little at a time, stirring after each time. Salt and pepper the mixture to your liking.

Shape patties and bake for 15 minutes, flip and bake for another 10 minutes. Allow to cool 5-10 minutes before serving.

Serve them on your favorite bun, flat bread or wrap them in lettuce.

Makes 10 patties

We are all busy and eating healthy takes time, I know this first hand. What is one thing that I say over and over in my posts?

BE AWARE OF WHAT YOU ARE EATING! Know the ingredients, know the product and stay away from chemicals and preservatives.

Healthy Eating!

Going to rehab

“Hi. My name is Tasha and I am addicted to grocery shopping.”

Some people buy clothes, other shoes or purses… but I buy groceries. Nothing makes me happier than grocery shopping. I used to dread it – I wasn’t always creative in the kitchen, nor did I enjoy a lot of different kinds of foods.

But these days I am obsessed with finding new ingredients, cooking exotic recipes and over all expanding my knowledge of food. I view the produce section as my play land, I drool over all of the bulk beans and grains and I OOOO and AAHHH over pretty much everything else!

I could go shopping every day and I would end up buying something fun and fascinating each and every time. Food truly amazes me!

My veganism is going wonderfully! Yesterday was kind of hard – I wanted cheese really bad and knowing that I couldn’t eat it made it even harder. And I was hungry most of the day, but it was the hunger that wasn;t in my stomach; it was in my head.

But today I was totally pumped to eat vegan and cravings were non existent. It helped looking through recipes and health articles last night, too.

I think the problem people have with food change is that they think there is nothing to eat. When in fact there are thousands of dishes waiting to be made and eaten. It always helps to have a game plan, too. It’s those times that you are starving and you looking around finding yourself discouraged because “there is nothing to eat!”. Change is hard but you have to make sure you are setting yourself up for easy adaption.

I woke up hungry this morning so I poured myself a bowl of cereal – granola and gluten free Kidz Puffs with almond milk.

I subbed my coffee for tea.

Woke up not feeling very well. Throat, nose and ears all bent out of shape. J seems to be feeling better but I did take him to the doctor as I wanted to make sure it wasn’t settling into his chest before the weekend. Doctor said not to worry!

I was pretty much starving by the time we arrived back at home, so I heated up a huge mug of lentil soup.

Along with a piece of sprouted toast with Earth Balance on it.

I was shoving this soup into my mouth – I was soooo hungry! Filled me up quite nicely.

I munched on some cantaloupe for dessert.

It was a gorgeous day in the Seattle area today! J and I went and did a little walking and window shopping. We went to Pier One then to the grocery store.

I bought some kale, spinach, canned beans, coconut yogurt… and this.

Lotus Root. I have seen this featured in recipes for a while now and I have always been intrigued. It actually caught me by surprise as I wasn’t even looking for it but then noticed it with the other Japanese produce. I took a chance and bought one really not sure what I was going to do with it.

J snacked on some raisins when we got back home, isn’t he cute!? I can’t believe how grown up looking he is getting!

I made a hot mug of ginger green tea in my new mug I bought at Pier One. I love their clearance section!

Then I started to experiment with my new friend, The Lotus Root.

I’m going to make a separate post on the recipes and techniques as it is long and complex but here are my finished products:

Lotus Crisps

Stir Fry.

After dinner I snuggled up with my boy… I mean Coconut Bliss.

Nothing says love like Chocolate!

Just another Tuesday

Hey guys!

I wanted to say thank you for all of the suggestions regarding my dinner woes. So many great suggestions and comments – this is why I love blogging! It helps me see it in many perspectives, which I need at times!

Again, thank you all so very much!

I am going to be making this brief – Marc is on his way home from an all day wrestling tournament. He left at 7 and it’s 8 right now! I just talked to him and he is exhausted and his voice is crackly from yelling calls all day.

Breakfast was coffee and half of a Lara bar (un pictured)

I decided to take J to the gym with me and I got an awesome 4 miler in! It really brightened my day and mood!

I came home, ate the other half of my Larabar and took a nice hit shower. J was exhausted so he was asleep right away.

Lunch was my left over takeout which I put on a big bed of baby spinach.

Yum! It wasn’t spicy enough so I added chili flakes and sri racha – POW!

Then J and I headed out to gather the rest of my Christmas gifts. I only had to go to one store and it wasn’t busy at all – thank goodness.

CONFESSION TIME: I saw some items that I wanted and I bought them to be presents from Jordan. :Insert shocked face: … is that bad? Meh.

I also received some cool things in the mail today! SCORE!!!

My variety of Larabar’s that I won!

AND my I ❤ TOFU shirt!

YAY!!! It’s a tad snug but whatever.

I also scored some goodies at the store.

I have yet to try these flavors and I am SOOOOO excited!

AND I found this item:

The kind folks at Good Belly sent me some coupons to try their product. It is a probiotoc fruit drink with a lot of good for you ingredients in it. (I recommend checking out their website as they go into detail.)

I opted for the mango flavor because I really have no idea what black currants taste like… ha

It tasted just like mango/pear juice! Very yummy! You are supposed to drink 8oz a day for the benefits to be seen so I am up for the challenge!

For those of you that have digestion problems, probiotics are wonderful! I am fine in that region but it definitely will not hurt any. Cheers for good digestion!

I also made some cookies: (I had two =)

Wrapped my presents:

It was a fun afternoon! =)

I put J to bed rather early; he was really cranky and rubbing his eyes. I settled down with a nice plate of dinner.

Carrots, celery, hummus, couscous, and edamame.

And for dessert I munched on an apple with PB.

Well I am off to read my new magazine and wait for hubs to get home!

Enjoy your night!

Cough Cough

This is what I am doing tonight: drinking tea. Looks like my cold has hit me once again – damnit. It’s my throat that’s bothering me this time… cough… cough…. cough. AND I was supposed to go to my friends, Sam, house for a card party and I totally forgot! =( But I don’t think she would want my sick butt around her or her guests.

While grocery shopping I picked up this variety pack of teas:

And I quickly choose the Throat Coat – it’s really good! Sweet with licorice!

I really suck at drinking water during the winter months so I am hoping my tea stash will start helping me drink more fluids, besides coffee.

And speaking of coffee, I tried a packet of Starbucks Via this morning.

I wasn’t in the mood to really need a full cup or to dirty the coffee pot so I tried a packet. It was pretty simple to make: pour grounds in a cup, add HOT water, stir and let sit for a minute. (I’m not sure if this is part of the actual directions but it helped with the taste and body)

The verdict? Meh. It had that “sour” taste that I hate in coffee. I can see this being good for a Coffee Crisis (!!) but not everyday.

I also had some sprouted toast with PB and some blueberry Oikos.

The J and I cleaned up in the kitchen – he LOVES to help!

Even though I wasn’t feeling well I decided to hit the gym anyway. Just some light running and hill walking. It felt great even though I REALLY did not want to go.

I refueled with a Green Brown Monster.

  • almond milk
  • strawberries
  • frozen peaches and berries
  • flax meal
  • Chocolate Amazing Meal
  • spinach
  • 3 clementines

Sweet but good! I haven’t had Amazing Meal in a while because I really am not find of the chocolate flavor. But I felt I needed the extra nutrients.

And here is J’s HUGE pile of toys! Poor kid, I think he’s neglected! 😉

A few hours later I had lunch 2 – just a fun plate of goodness!

A carrot, celery, Mary’s crackers, olives, mozz cheese and the rest of my hummus. Just an FYI about me: I declare olives their own food group. I LOVE OLIVES! Black or green – I could just pop them al day long! I think it has to do with putting them on my fingers when I was a kid! 😉

I still have no idea what I am going to have for dinner – I’m not that hungry but since it’s 8:30 I better think of something. I recieved a few emails about our vase that is on our mantle so I thought I would show it off some more!

We found it at Costco this summer right after we bought our home. They ad a traveling showcase and we were lucky to go to the Costco that had the stand! It instantly reminded me of the Ocean! The original owners of our home had a blown piece of glass and it was so elegant! We knew we had to copy and find one of our own.

Anyway, I hope everyone had a great night! I just watched Shrek the Halls – LOVED IT!

PEACE – A new day!

I promise that I will be in a better mind set than I was yesterday. I had a good night sleep and woke up feeling more positive! =) And thanks everyone for the kind comments – it really does help! LOVE YOU!!!

So I am drinking my coffee out of my “peace” coffee cup with some mint chocolate cocoa powder. Mmmm… I thought it was appropriate.

But I found this disappointing – I opened the package with it being only half full. Boo. I hate when packaging companies do this; make the package look big but the contents small.

Yesterday J and I did a little shopping! :Ahem: For groceries 😉

Just some staples: almond milk, J’s milk, honey, tofu, some fruit, kobacha!, yougurt, granola, soup… I also picked up some miso since I have a lot of recipes that call for it that I want to try.

I also picked up some food specifically for PFM as I have been slacking the past few weeks.

We also went to World Market. Marc had mentioned that he wanted to do Chanukah this year and I saw that they had menorah’s the last time I went shopping. I was so excited that he had said this! We have never done Chanukah before – I am in the process of gathering some authentic Jewish recipes to make. I already make a good matzo ball soup but there are so many other dishes to make!

I also picked up these yummy items:

The Hello Kitty snacks are for Marc’s stocking (shhhh), I have always wanted to try Tabouli, we were out of Cholula, I needed some tumeric, chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate (the Lindt sea salt dark chocolate is DEVINE! LOVE the combo!) and some veggie tortilla chips.

I love World Market!

I munched on some Pumpkin Pie yogurt and granola while J ate his dinner:

The taste was AWESOME but I am so used to greek yogurt that I didn’t enjoy the thinness of it. BUT it was still goodness in a bowl!

And then when I was feeling down I sucked it up, grabbed a few clementines and snuggled on the couch with my new reading material.

Oh, and I found Mr. Penguin hiding under the blankets – peek-a-boo!

I hope everyone has a great Friday! And thanks again for all the kind words of support! =)

Voting ends in a few days.

Yesterday I made the trip to go to the chiropractor as I have a pinched nerve in my lower back. It is about a 40 minute drive from our home so it’s not like an easy task to get there. J and I showed up and the door was locked! It was 12:45 and they close at 1 for lunch. I called my H and asked him WTF – he goes there more often than I do so I thought he may have known. I was about to cry! I haven’t been able to run because I don’t want any more damage until I can get it checked out… =(  I guess the doctor had a meeting at noon. No note on the door, NOTHING! Let me just say I was not in a good mood after that!

So I made the best of the situation and J and I went to the library. I picked up 5 or six vegetarian, vegan and raw food cook books. It wasn’t a total waste but I was still upset. So I am going BACK this afternoon at about 3 – what a waste!

I was starving when I returned back home so I made a cup of tomato soup, rosemary crackers, cambazola cheese and edamame.

Then Marc and I went shopping for groceries – we were out of all produce! I was starting to freak out a bit! lol

It wasn’t my normal place that I like to shop at. I like to shop FredMeyer, Trader Joes, Central Market and sometime Whole Foods; we ended up at Albertson’s. Their organic produce was limited and pretty much crappy, no greek yogurt (although they had organic), and I felt out of place. Oh well, I did what I had to do!

I recently participated in an ornament exchange and mine showed up yesterday! They are so cute!

They are His and Her snowmen!

J helped me put them on the tree, too! =)

    DSC03130 DSC03131

Thank you so much, Denise!

Before dinner I was in a snacking mood so I busted out the Sabra hummus and Mary’s Gone Crackers! PERFECT!

After J went down for the night, I decided on some Amy’s black bean chili – always great when I am indecisive!

Marc and I snuggled on the couch the entire night, watching the football game and celebrating our Fantasy Football WIN this week! With only 5 more games left, these next week are crucial for us and our standings!

I was missing my yogurt so I had this lovely bowl of goodness for breakfast! Strawberry yogurt, granola, apple and PB!

Well I am off to feed J some lunch, take a shower and get my back cracked. (hopefully!!!) Enjoy your Tuesday!

A little late… oops!

Hey guys! So yesterday was a little crazy AND I managed to fall asleep on the couch early, again! What is going on with me?! I was right in the middle of a post so I might as well finish it…

I woke up too early this yesterday morning. Errr…. correction. J woke me up too early. 6am on the dot. I still have no idea why he is waking up so early. Marc says it’s because of the time change. Could be, but it still sucks.

Coffee, coffee and more coffee.

Last night The night before I decided to not hit the gym – my nose was running and I sneezed over 20 times yesterday the day before.

So this yesterday morning I checked out our On Demand and did the 30 Day Shred. It felt great! I haven’t done this is months! My legs were strong but my upper body is lacking – especially my shoulders.

I was feeling warm, a bit sweaty and great energy so I decided to check out the yoga section yoga. I found one for beginners, (Yoga virgin here!), said “Namaste” and started in. A big FAIL! I only did it for about 2 minutes and gave up. I kept having to look at the TV screen every two seconds, as soon as I was in a position she changed it and I just could not keep up. I was very disappointed :(  I have heard that a class is better for learning than doing it at home. My gym has some yoga classes and i might take them up on their offer – they come with my membership, anyway.

I made a shake after my little workout:

  • Almond milk
  • almond butter
  • spinach leaves
  • a half of an orange
  • strawberries
  • blueberries

After I showered, J and I went to Costco. The day started out sunny and nice BUT it eventually turned into rain AND HAIL again. One our way to Costco I drove through a cloud burst – it was raining SO hard! AND THEN I drove through a hail storm! I couldn’t see anything and there was an inch of hail stuck under the wipers when I got to Costco. I drove maybe a mile and then all of a sudden it just stopped. It was the strangest thing! I’m gald it stopped before we arrived because there was no way I was going to walk with J out in it.

We were only there for a little bit – I needed only a handful of items. After we got back home I was starving. And guess how the weather was now?! SUNNY! I couldn’t believe it! Seattle’s weather is crazy, I tell you!

I made myself a veggie burger – yum!

I piles on lettuce, tomato, onion, swiss cheese, avocado and salsa. It was messy but very filling!

I bought some avocados at Costco – they were on sale because they were VERY ripe. I was only able to salvage 2 out of the bag of five for eating. And what do you make with ripe avocados?

I just eyeballed some cilantro, onion, tomato, and mashed it all together with 3 large Hass avocados. Added a bunch of salt and pepper and a squeeze of fresh lemon. Holy Guacamole!

A perfect snack! And those flax and soy tortilla chips are a new favorite of mine! Trader Joe shoppers – check them out!

Marc and I did dinner sololy, yet together. He wanted left over tacos with guac, obviously, and I was craving sweets! So I made a piping hot bowl of oats with almond butter, honey, ( we are out of maple syrup – boo), dried cranberries, granola for crunch and cinnamon.

I ate as much as I could, half of the bowl. It was dense and filling! AND exactly what I wanted and needed! And like I mentioned earlier – I fell asleep at about 10, on the couch! I may have to switch my blogging time from late night to something a little earlier. I usually blog late at night after Marc has fallen asleep because it feels like “my time” and it’s a nice way to relax before bed.

J let me sleep in until 7 this morning! Thanks, J! The first thing I noticed when I rolled out of bed were my legs – they were burning! You know… the GOOD kind of burn. Jillian never fails me! It’s amazing how even a 25 minute workout can make you feel your muscles again.

I started off with some coffee and a shake.

If you have noticed I have stopped calling them Green Monster’s because… well… mine are never green. =)

It’s Saturday! What are your plans?

breakfast, dinner, family, football, garden, groceries, lunch

And the cold sets in

You should see me – I am wrapped in my favorite fleece blanket. It is cold, bone chilling cold. Dramatic? Maybe, but I am not used to this fall weather yet. It was a beautiful sunny day but the high was only 61 and right now it’s 50. Brrrr! However, I am extremely cold all of the time!
PS – Jenna, I am so sorry that your heater isn’t working right now! 😦

Well, onto today.
This morning I woke up, brewed some java and starting getting down to business. Writing.

As I have been mentioning I am going to be writing nutritional articles to an online personal fit website. I needed to submit my first one, along with a bio, this weekend and another one in the next few days. I wrote my first article on Clean Eating – what else?! I promise to post links as soon as can!

All that writing made me hungry so I made a nice bowl of yogurt, granola, apple slices and almond butter – it hit the spot!

Weird fact about me #598: I can’t eat lunch BEFORE I take a shower. It has to be AFTER. I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s the joy of knowing I get to go into the kitchen and make myself something yummy after a nice hot shower. Or maybe I feel the need to be clean so late in the day. Strange, huh.
What is a crazy fact about you and food?

Today I nibbled on some terriyaki bits that I made a few days back while I was contemplating what I REALLY was going to eat.

I finally settled on a chicken breast sandwich.

  • sprouted bread
  • lots of hummus
  • baby spinach leaves
  • avocado, added after the fact
  • tomato slices
  • s & p
  • chicken breast chunks that Marc bbqued last night

Paired with a nice cup of Pacific french onion soup.

And since it was Sunday and game day I had to have a beer. I ended up only drinking half but it really hit the spot!

I am sad to say that this will be the last produce I get from my little container garden this year. =(

Since the frost is coming, my plants will soon be black and dead. I was able to salvage the last of my un-ripened tomatoes and my cute little green peppers. I seriously don’t know what happened to my peppers this year – they are not supposed to be this small and this is the first time I picked from the plant. Hopefully they will taste good! I know the tomatoes ROCK but they will have to ripen in the window for a while. I have never had green tomatoes, as in fried green tomatoes, because they just don’t sound that appealing to me. Oh well…

After the bulk of the games were over with we went to the grocery store to pick up some fruit and a few other items. Jordan has outgrown all of his hats so we went to the baby section and found an adorable fleece hat! (Fred Meyer rocks because it’s a grocery store AND a department store!) We also found the cutest outfit for dress up dinners or nice events. It’s a little big but should fit him this winter. I think I am going to wrap it up and have him open it at his party.

If you are a parent, what did you buy your little one for their first birthday?

Marc and I ate rather late tonight, around 7:30. We had separate dinners tonight so I went a little creative. I am bored of my salads and I saw a post tonight on veggie burgers and it looked so appetizing! Veggie burger it was!

  • flat bread bread/bun
  • pesto
  • feta
  • veggie burger
  • tomato
  • spinach leaves
  • s & p
  • avocado

OMG – I could have eaten two (or more) of these! I scarfed it down so quickly, you would have thought I hadn’t eaten in days! This is definitely a combo I am eating again, very soon!

And a nice bowl of big, juicy green grapes.

Today was a perfect Sunday – surrounded by the ones I love the most. I hope everyone had a great weekend, as well. Enjoy your Monday!

101 list, green monster, groceries, workout

Eyes. Are. Heavy.

I hope everyone is enjoying their Saturday.
I, however, am exhausted! I stayed up until 2 last night working on my iPod and just overall not sleepy and I woke up this morning and went straight to a spinning class. No coffee, either. Yikes!
But I loved the spinning class – this was my first one! It was an hour of leg burning, sweat dripping, heart pounding intensity. My legs are very sore right now, too. I have always wanted to attend one and I have heard nothing but great things about them. I am glad I did!
I woke up and toasted a piece of spouted bread with almond butter. I knew I needed some fuel for my class!
Afterwords I made myself a chilly, red green monster – it was so soothing! Almond milk, strawberries, a peach, half of an orange, a scoop of Amazing Meal (my last one! more is on the way :), blueberries and some water.

We made an amazing run to Costco grabbing some bananas, chicken, brussel sprouts, avocado, strawberries and melon. It wasn’t that crowded, either! Made a quick stop at Target to pick up some personal items and them home I went. I was starving and tired! I was comforted by a nice warm bowl of lentil soup. It hit the spot!

I feel like I need some coffee, though. All I have is decaf so I may take a run to go grab some while Marc is out. Maybe….
