The Clean Eating Bracelet

Mary, the inventor of the Clean Eating Bracelet, contacted me a few weeks ago asking if I wouldn’t mind taking a look at her product. After reviewing her website I thought it was an amazing tool especially for those of you that are new to clean eating.
The Clean Eating Bracelet is NOT a diet bracelet. It is a stylish tool that helps individuals keep track of how many healthy servings of fresh food they are eating on a daily basis. Each color represents a food group:

BLUE beads represent servings of whole-grain and complex CARBOHYDRATES. The ORIGINAL BRACELET has 8 blue beads for 8 carb servings per day.
RED beads are used to represent lean and low-fat protein servings. There are 6 red beads, and this category includes dairy, if you choose to eat dairy.
PURPLE beads are used for FRUIT servings. Three “fruit beads” are included in the ORIGINAL BRACELET.
GREEN beads represent VEGETABLE servings, and there are 4 of these on the ORIGINAL BRACELET.
Along with this beautiful bracelet, she also includes pamphlets explaining what a serving counts as and describes a Clean Eating Diet. She has named her eating plan the ARCH eating plan, which you can read about here. And again, this is NOT a diet bracelet that counts calories. This is a tool that helps you remember to eat a balanced diet while looking stylish. In fact, I wear mine quite a bit just because I like it so much! =)
I frequently receive emails from individuals how are very new to eating clean and ask me for advice and tools to help them achieve their goal of changing the way of eating. I highly recommend this bracelet to those that need a little reminder and help along the way.
Along with creating bracelets, Mary has a life coaching business called Powerful Mind Coaching, specializing in individuals needs to gain that often “missing” feeling back into their life. She is such an inspiring woman who has helped so many regain that feeling of wellness through positive reassurance and guidance.
Mary, thank you for allowing me to help spread your work and word, Mary! Keep up the fantastic job!
For those that have questions about this bracelet, feel free to contact myself or Mary at anytime.
These opinions are mine solely and I was not paid or bribed to review this product.

Attune Foods Product Review

Attune Foods recently sent me some of their pro-biotic chocolate bars to sample. Free chocolate? I couldn’t resist!

Attuune Foods is a company that actually cares about individuals health.

Attune fact

Attune probiotic bars combine all-natural, great-tasting ingredients with powerful probiotics that are clinically proven to support digestive health and promote a strong immune system.*

Ok – so they are GOOD for you AND they are chocolate. BUT do they taste good?

I was sent three flavors: Raspberry, Coffee Bean and plain Dark Chocolate.

All are equally fantastic tasting! However, my favorite was the Coffee Bean. They are all vegan and gluten free, too. Besides chocolate bars they also make granola munch and granola bars; all with the same healthy probiotics. You can view their products here.

They also sent me a box of Uncle Sam Cereal.

uncle sam cereal

I love Uncle Sam Cereal! I used to eat this when I was in high school and I had forgotten how much I love this cereal!

“This high fiber cereal is a unique blend of toasted whole grain wheat flakes and flaxseed. Each bowl of this whole grain cereal is loaded with powerful, heart healthy ALA Omega-3’s from flaxseed and is high in dietary fiber. It is also a low sodium and low sugar cereal (with less than 1g sugars). Best of all, the toasted whole grain wheat flakes and flax seed stay crispy and crunchy from the first spoonful to the last.”

I have heard you can bake/cook with it but I have only eaten the traditional way: with cold almond milk and fruit. If you have never tried Uncle Sam Cereal be sure to pick a box up the next time you are at the store.

Thanks again, Attune Foods, for sending me these wonderful products! I have now become a fan!

Product Review – WooHoo Foods Gudernoobs + giveaway!

The kind gals at WooHoo foods sent me a sample of their ever-so popular, Gudernoobs. What is a Gudernoob? A Gudernoob is a bite size, decadent date snack. No added sugar, no added dyes – pure whole food ingredients. A perfect snack for kids and adults alike.

Thank you for the package!

I first learned about Gudernoobs from a recent comment on my blog from a mother asking me what I thought of this product. This was the first time I had ever heard of this product – they are a local Florida company and from the looks of it, only Florida carry’s this product at this current time. I contacted the Queen Goodernoob herself, Holly Murphy, and asked if I could sample her product.

Gudernoobs remind me a bite size Larabar. They are soft, chewy and very delicious! They come in four flavors – Apple Cider, Banana Oatmeal, Peanut Butter and Chocolate Brownie.

My favorite was Apple Cider, but I am very partial to apple and cinnamon flavors. They were a wonderful treat and a filling snack.
I love the nutritional breakdown of these bite size jewels. All natural, very clean, vegan AND raw! Hence their slogan: Keep it Real. Love it!

From their website, these little snacks are geared more towards the younger crowd as a portable, healthy snack, but I sure do love them, too! And of course, I tested them on J… which he also loved!

WooHoo foods – you get my clean eating, veg and AND raw food seal of approval! Keep up the wonderful job and keep promoting your healthy snack! Any chance you will be moving into stores around the country? In the meantime, you can participate in their Call to Action plan and submit a letter to your local store manager.

If you are interested in purchasing their product, you can do so here

Since they had sent me not one, but TWO packages I have decided to give one away to my readers! Ya, I kinda like you guys. =)

My Aeropress

As most of you know, I love my coffee. I’m not one of those coffee drinkers who order a double tall, vanilla, extra foam, extra hot, non fat latte. No no… I am happy with a hot cup of drip coffee, black. However, I have had my fair share of nasty cups of coffee; bitter, sour, too strong, not strong enough. Coffee is like wine to me. I can taste each and every note of the coffee and can tell the difference between blends.

I have also owned my fair share of coffee makers. From espresso machines, to drip coffee makers and French presses; I’ve tried them all. Call it bad luck, or a sign, but every single one of those items listed has broke, leaving me coffee-less and unwanted dollars leaving my pocket book.

One coffee maker that has never let me down has been my Aeropress. I am sure most of you have net even heard of an Aeropress, but it has been the BEST coffee maker/press I have ever had. But besides its durability, it also MAKES the BEST cup of coffee I have EVER HAD. It is unbelievably smooth but the taste is bold and rich. I have made several friends and family members a cup of coffee with this press and they all had agreed that it was one of the best cup of coffee they have ever had.

One look at the press may have someone ask, How do you make coffee with THIS?

It doesn’t look like much, does it. But let me show you how simple this little coffee maker is:

Here are the pieces :

You have the coffee chamber, the press and the filter.

It uses a micro-filter to filter the grounds from the water. Luckily these little filters are very durable and can easily be rinsed and re-used, especially useful if you are making several cups of coffee back-to-back.

The black ring and filter screw onto the bottom of the coffee chamber.

You add your coffee right into the chamber. Any grind will work, as well as any kind of coffee you prefer. Depending on how strong of coffee you like, you can add as much or as little coffee to suit your taste. I find the strength is similar to an Americano.

Next, you place the chamber on top of your mug or on a container with an opening that will hold the press.

Pour your hot water into the chamber until it reaches the top.

Stir for 10 seconds.

DSC05299 DSC05300

It will start to drip out into the cup as soon as you place the water into the chamber. Be sure to watch the amount of coffee that is dripping into the cup as you do not want it to over flow.

You can continue to add water to the chamber until you feel you have enough water to make a full cup of coffee. The chamber holds about a cup and a half of liquid.

Once you feel you have enough water, place the presser into the chamber and gently press down. ( I heat up about 2 1/2 cups of water to make a large cup of coffee.)

That’s it! Simple! I know it may look like a lot of work, but it is just as simple as a French press but takes less time. From start to finish it takes less than a minute. Isn’t that awesome!?

And clean up is a snap. Unscrew the black filter off of the bottom, continue to press the grounds out, pull the press out of the chamber and quickly rinse. And remember to rinse the filter as you can re-use it!

Now sit back and enjoy – pure bliss.

The only thing I would say about the Aeropress is it is not practical for a large group. We had my family over for dinner a few nights back and a conventional coffee maker would have been better, but I ended up making 5 cups of coffee with my Aeropress. It was a bit more work but EVERYONE enjoyed it! It made for great entertainment. 😉
Want your own Aeropress? Here is the list of retail stores that carry Aeropress’s or you can buy straight from Amazon. It is worth every penny, I promise!

Coconut Creamer review

The one thing I have learned since being vegan is there are substitutions to every kind of food imaginable. It is indeed possible to live a vegan life and still enjoy the pleasures and tastes of a non-vegan life.

Let’s talk coffee creamer. 99% of the time I drink my decaf coffee black. However, there are days that I want something sweet and I like to treat myself to an “at home” latte.

So Delicious makes a wonderful French Vanilla creamer. In fact this is the only creamer I buy and use when I want a special treat. Not only is it soy free and dairy free, all of the ingredients are GMO free and the coconut milk is 100% organic.

But how clean are the ingredients?

The last four ingredients are not clean, unfortunately.
Natural Flavors is another term for MSG. A tricky wording job that manufacturers use to add “flavoring” to food without saying MSG.
Titanium Dioxide is used to make the creamer white. Unfortunately titanium dioxide can be and is linked to possible health problems, including cancer. How much of this statement is truth is still being decided, though.
Dipotassium Phosphate is a food additive that is recognized by the FDA as “safe”. It is used in non-dairy creamers to prevent coagulation.
Carrageenan is a food additive derived from seaweed that acts as a thickener for vegan foods. However, it has been linked to possible intestinal problems such as inflammation and bowel disease.

So by now I am sure you are asking yourself, “Why would she be drinking this or even promoting this product on this blog?”

I guess the point I am trying to make is: Yes, there are plenty of substitutions for products when you are vegan. HOWEVER, it is still just as important to read the labels and fully understand what you are eating or drinking.

And yes, I do consume this product but not every day. Not even on a weekly basis. And since we are talking “clean eating” for those non-vegan readers, half-and-half is your best choice; but please limit your consumption as it is not “healthy” in terms of calories, fat and what it can do to your overall health.

Nutritional info for So Delicious French Vanilla Creamer:

Keep reading those labels and educating yourself about what you are consuming. Awareness and education are the tools to live a better, healthy life.

Let’s play!

Good morning and happy Friday!

J and I took a lovely 45 minute walk this morning before breakfast. I love that it is getting warmer in the Seattle area! My back is feeling great when I walk but I still cannot run. I facebooked about it a few nights back – basically I was feeling great and decided to try a nice slow jog outside. I wasn’t able to jog for more than a minute and I had to start walking; A lot of pain still when I jog. I am still really bummed about this and not to make things worse but my half marathon would have been tomorrow morning. =(

I am meeting with the doctor next week to go over my x-ray. Baby steps.

I was craving cereal this morning so I made a scrumptious bowl of granola and Puffins with almond milk – I LOVE Puffins, but only the original. 🙂

I had a sample box of granola from VegFest and it looked really good. MMmmm chocolate for breakfast is ALWAYS a good thing!

Sorry for the lack of posting this week. I just haven’t really been feeling the whole “blogging every day” thing. I have been a bit distracted – nothing serious, just life.

I did want to share some of my eats from yesterday, though. I know there are a lot of you that get inspiration from my eating.

Breakfast – Tofu Scramble

Dinner was a filling salad – red leaf and romain lettuce, sunflower seeds, onion, red bell pepper, EVOO, salt and pepper and some home made croutons.

Question for you all: I made hummus a few nights back and it doesn’t taste right. I followed the recipe exactly but it is very bitter tasting. I am thinking it’s the Tahini – I used raw Tahini. Should I use toasted TahiniDo you have any tips when you make hummus??  I mean don’t get me wrong, I will eat it up but it’s not that enjoyable. =(

Ron from NuNaturals, Inc contacted me a few weeks back asking if I would like to sample their products. I have heard great things about stevia in general but have never once tried it. Of course I was thrilled on the idea and said Yes! I was in complete shock when my order arrived – look at all of this product!

I was given these wonderful extracts to try:

Plus these large containers of baking blends:

A large box of packets and a packet of protein powder:

AND to top it all off, a HUGE supply of recipes to try!

I wanted to send a huge THANK YOU to Ron and everyone at NuNaturals, inc! I will be cooking and tasting for weeks to come! Have you tried NuNaturals products or stevia in general? Do YOU have any tips or recipes you would like to share with me?

J and I also went to the neighbor hood park yesterday. We ran, played and he had a great time getting out of the house! DSC05129 DSC05134 DSC05135 DSC05136DSC05142DSC05146DSC05145 DSC05148

Product Review – Galaxy Granola

I am sure most of you who frequently read other blogs have seen Galaxy Granola featured. I know I have and was pretty psyched when they contacted me to sample their product. Who doesn’t like getting free granola!?

First of all, I was expecting to receive single portions of one kind. I was pleasantly surprised to see THREE FULL SIZE bags of their wonderful granola! They sent me Not Sweet Vanilla, Raspberry and Vanilla Almond.

Galaxy Granola’s baking concept puts them into another category in the granola world. They pride themselves using no oil in their product, rather baking their granola in fruit! Granola is amazingly scrumptious but relatively high in fat in most cases. For those watching their waistlines granola isn’t the best option for a snack. Baking with apple sauce instead of oil reduces the fat content by as much as 70% – now that’s a lot of fat! Here is their complete story behind the genius baking concept.

So how much fat is in their products? Well to start, here is the list of ingredients in their Vanilla Almond granola: DSC04675

Pretty clean, I would say. Although for vegans that do not eat honey this would not be a good choice, but their Not Sweet Vanilla does not contain any honey.

Here is the nutrition facts for their Vanilla Almond:

At first glance it looks great! Low fat, low calories, a decent amount of protein and sugar. But remember to look at the portion size – 1/4 of a cup.

Hmm…. I don’t know about you but I could never eat a 1/4 cup of granola! My servings are more like 3/4 cup to a cup. So let’s say I were to eat a regular serving of granola for my liking, 3/4 of a cup. Instead of 120 calories it would be more like 360 and instead of 2.2 grams of fat it would be 6.6. Still not bad but much more realistic.

So how does it taste? It’s actually very good! I have tasted all three flavors and I love the Raspberry with almond milk for cereal. Mmmmmm! And the Vanilla Almond is great for snacking on – I am pretty sure I ate all of the almonds. 😉 It has a great crunch, too.

Now you all know that I give HONEST product reviews – I wear my feelings on my sleeve, so to speak.

This is not my favorite granola and I probably will not buy this again. There are a few reasons why I say this.

ONE: I love my granola the have more complexity to them. Seeds, nuts, dried fruit… It adds texture, flavor and more than one way to incorporate healthy fat into my diet – Omegas! I mentioned above that I really enjoyed the raspberry flavor but the raspberries are freeze dried. Freeze dried fruit irks me out a bit – I think it’s the texture and the way they “melt”.

TWO: The serving size still bothers me in comparison to other granola and their nutrition info. Here is a comparison from my favorite granola:

INGREDIENTS: Rolled oats*, evaporated cane juice*, soy oil*, brown rice flour*, pumpkin seeds*, flaxseeds*, oat syrup solids*, sea salt, molasses*, cinnamon*. * = organic

Sure it is higher in fat but it also contains pumpkin seeds which are loaded with good, HEALTHY fat.  And it is a realistic serving size – 3/4 of a cup. Also, I would rather choose a product that uses organic ingredients.

Please do not get me wrong – I really do love their concept behind their granola. Oil is unnecessary and over used in a lot of cases and baking in fruit is a healthy alternative that should be practiced more often. Kuddos to them for being one of the first granola companies to do this! But in the overall picture I see nothing special about their product.

Have you tried Galaxy Granola? What did you think of it?

Product Review – Custom Choice Cereal

A few weeks back I won a free bag of Custom Choice Cereal from FoodCents blog. I am not gluten intolerant but I do love trying new, healthy products. I told Custom Choice Cereal that I would do a product review fro them as I know I have several readers who are gluten free.

Custom Choice Cereal is an online gluten free cereal company. I know how hard it is to find quality gluten free products in the super markets as I have done my fair share of looking. The great concept about this company is you are able to choose your very own custom blend of cereal; make it as crazy as you like or keep it plain and simple!

You start with your base: you can choose from Cinnamon Granola, Corn Flakes or Good Morning Flakes. Then you pick what dried fruit you want in your mixture. They have 11 kinds to choose from; apples, banana chips, pears, strawberries, goji berries, blueberries and so on.

Next you can add nuts and seeds. Walnuts, coconut, pecans… 9 in total. And that’s it – your very own blend of gluten free cereal! How fun! Or if you are not in the mood to create your own they have pre-planned mixes to choose from or to get inspiration from.

You are able to choose how ever many ingredients your heart desires. It keeps tallying up the price that is visible in the lower right hand corner, as well as adds up the nutrition info for you to view at all times.

I was able to create my own mix: I chose the Good Morning Flakes, which has flax, buckwheat, quinoa and amaranth in them, dried strawberries, banana chips and goji berries for fruit and walnuts for my nuts. I sent my mix in over the weekend and it arrived only a few days later! I was so impressed by their shipping and customer service – 5 stars all around!

I started nibbling on some as soon as I opened the package. Nom Nom

The taste was phenomenal! The flakes have a wonderful crunch and lightly sweetened taste and the nuts and fruit go wonderfully together! Not too overwhelming and every bite was a surprise! My package of cereal was 12 oz all together and would have cost $8.65 if I had to have paid.

They also print the nutrition facts and stuck it on the back. Serving size is 2/3 of a cup.

I have been munching on this cereal over the weekend and finally had a lovely bowl with almond milk this morning. So scrumptious! I really do love a great bowl of cereal! Who doesn’t?!

If you are living a gluten free life I highly recommend this cereal. Even if you are not I STILL recommend it! To some it may be spendy but unfortunately there are not a lot of choices to choose from if you cannot have gluten – especially if you do not live near a health food store. Here is their entire About Us page stating their wonderful business model and why it is so important for gluten free individuals to have a company to ensure the safety and quality of gluten free food.

And be sure to check out their blog as it contains recipes, reviews and updates. Have questions? Their FAQ page is loaded with wonderful answers, too.

Wonderful product, Custom Choice Cereal! Keep up the amazing work!

Product Review – Spices Inc

This review is LONG over due – my sincere apologies to Greg at Spices Inc!

A few months ago I was contacted by Greg, founder of Spices Inc, me to do a giveaway on my blog, and they also hooked me up with 4 free spices, too!

Pizza Seasoning, Cinnamon, Manzanillo Mexican Seasoning and Chili Powder.

Spices Inc was created in hopes to bring quality, unique and traditional spices to homes all over the country and world. Greg has a deep knowledge of food as he has been a chef,  and also has a passionate understanding of health and how important it is to so many of us. Spices Inc goes beyond the traditional garlic powder, dried basil and parsley that we are all too fond of, he has created a list of the most exotic and hard to find spices for our food enjoyment. Believe me, you will not be able to find these on the shelves of your favorite super market!

Spices Inc also prides themselves with top-notch customer service, free shipping with every 35$ or more order and knows how important referrals and word of mouth can be. Especially in the world of internet, networking and blogging. You can read their entire story here.

What I love about Spices Inc is the quality of their product. I would not be lying when I said their cinnamon is the BEST cinnamon I have ever tasted. In my life. And their pizza seasoning? I couldn’t imagine eating pizza without it! Not only can you see the quality, but you can smell the fresh aroma as soon as you unscrew the lid. It’s amazing how much of a difference there is between Spices Inc spices and the ones you buy at the store. No comparison.

They also have a wide variety of other products, like their Organic line. The best variety I have seen. And check out the prices! Very cost effective when compared to super markets. Spices Inc also carries a wonderful Gourmet Salt line, Salt Free products, and custom spice sets that make wonderful gifts.

I am a supporter and fan for life. I love seeing companies care about the health of others rather than their own wallet. Greg, you are doing an amazing job and I can only wish the very best in your business!

And be sure to visit their Blog as it contains a lot of vital health posts and recipes.

Have you tried Spices Inc spices before?

Veggie Tales

Happy Wednesday! The week half over, folks!

Ok, so some fun things to tell you all about: I have decided to run a half marathon in 5 WEEKS!

My hometown, Wenatchee WA, is having their annual full, half, 10K and 5K on April 17th and I bit the bullet and signed up for it! I am currently training for a half marathon in June, but as soon as I saw this one I knew I had to do it. It’s my hometown, you know?!

I’m not looking to set a record or to finish first, but just to have fun! I haven’t been home in a while and I have been feeling a bit homesick; I thought this would help my blues go away. =)

AND this morning I bought a Garmin – man, who knew that simple running could have so many gadgets!

I have never been a runner until this past year. My first step was fitted shoes and I was hooked. I love to run now and I hope to continue for many years to come!

I recently had a question concerning my dinner a few nights back. I thought it was a great question and wanted to share with all of you.

Kim asked if I thought Morningstar Veggie Burgers were really “clean”.

I do have a small correction on that post – that veggie burger was Gardenburger brand. Never the less, I still feel it’s an important topic to write about.

It is so simple for anyone to look in the freezer section and start buying non-meat products thinking they are a “healthy” alternative. But when you start looking at the actual ingredients in these products, they are filled with preservatives and ingredients the average person still cannot pronounce.

Here is an example from  Morningstar Farms® Grillers Prime® Veggie Burgers:

There are plenty of ingredients that are not “clean” nor are they natural.

Please do not think I am bashing Morningstar, or any other company that makes frozen, meatless food. In a pinch, I buy them. Jordan LOVES meatless chicken nuggets, too. And if I am at a restaurant that has veggie burgers, I order it with a smile.

The actual product that I was eating was Gardenburger GardenVegan.

Not horrible, in my opinion, and a lot “cleaner” than some.

Although this is one of my favorite pre-mad veggie burgers that I have eaten: Chez Gourmet.

You can read my review here – I love them!

However, 99% of the time I make my own veggie burgers. This is the simplest and most effective way to eat wholesome food – make it yourself! You know exactly what goes into your food and it ALWAYS tastes fresher and better than store bought!

Here is my go-to veggie burger recipe:

Spelt Veggie Patties

  • 1 cup or one can cooked beans of your choice
  • 1 carrot, chopped in large pieces
  • 1 cup chopped onion in large pieces
  • 1/2 bell pepper, chopped in in large pieces
  • 1/4 cup raw spinach
  • 1/2 teaspoon dill
  • 2-3 fresh basil leaves or 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 2-3 sprigs of fresh cilantro (optional)
  • tablespoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder, or 1 clove fresh garlic
  • 1/4 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds
  • 1 cup of spelt flour
  • salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 375F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper or spray with cooking oil.

Place all of the ingredients in a food processor, MINUS the seeds and flour. Blend until mixture is creamy and dense, scraping the sides when needed. Remove the mixture and place in a large mixing bowl. Add seeds and stir until incorporated. Add flour a little at a time, stirring after each time. Salt and pepper the mixture to your liking.

Shape patties and bake for 15 minutes, flip and bake for another 10 minutes. Allow to cool 5-10 minutes before serving.

Serve them on your favorite bun, flat bread or wrap them in lettuce.

Makes 10 patties

We are all busy and eating healthy takes time, I know this first hand. What is one thing that I say over and over in my posts?

BE AWARE OF WHAT YOU ARE EATING! Know the ingredients, know the product and stay away from chemicals and preservatives.

Healthy Eating!
